Quarter 1
In these photos I summarized the important parts of my book which was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The goal of this project was to help people understand stories before they read the book.
This photo is about making a mural of people you think changed the world. I picked Barrack Obama because he got rid of the terrorist who destroyed the Twin Towers who is Bin Laden. I picked Nelson Mandela because he was part of the Apartheid which aided freedom for blacks. I chose Abraham Lincoln because he was the person who helped end slavery. I chose Gandhi because he was acting like Martin Luther King Jr. who was protesting for freedom.

Quarter 2
In these photographs, I am took all of the important settings of my book which was "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" and put all of those locations on a map. The goal of this Quarter 2 Silent Reading Project was to help people understand where the important events of the story took place.
Quarter 3
In these photos, I am showcasing My I.C.E. (In-Class Essay). I am showcasing my ICE about Discrimination because in this essay I am describing how to stop discrimination from ever happening again. Discrimination is especially, a really harsh action in the olden days that's why I am writing this essay on how to stop discrimination.
This you see next to me is my Quarter 3 Silent Reading Project based on the book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban . I am showcasing this because I devoted my time spending a lot of work putting thought into it. In this project I had to turn my regular 7th Grade reading book into a children's book.

Dear Director,
Hello, my name is Marc and I attend the School of the Epiphany. The 6th, 7th, 8th grades and I attended your play “Godspell.” I really enjoyed your play you put together and it makes me want to go back at Riordan to see another one of your plays.
As you know, I really loved all the acting and singing by all the actors. To me you did a phenomenal job on directing “Godspell.” The actors couldn’t do it without you. I enjoyed every minute of the play. I also have a few questions to ask you. Why did you choose to direct the play “Godspell” and not any other play? Was it difficult to direct “Godspell?” How long have you been directing plays? In the play I also enjoyed the performance because all the actors were energetic and their acting they did were astounding and flawless. I am joyous to see that you spent a lot of time working hard to produce a play like this one. It was a play like nothing I’ve ever seen with amazing acting and lots of singing! Bravo!
Hope to hear from you soon director. I learned new things I never knew before, so keep up the good work in your plays and let your imagination run free.
Sincerely, Marc

In this assignment, I had to design and create a letter to one of the members of the crew of the "Godspell" play at Riordan. I am showcasing this piece because it is showing my letter writing skills to see if I still remember how to write a letter.
The Outsiders I.C.E. (In-Class Essay)
In my opinion, Ford just wanted to save money to make a profit out of the movie. Obvious reasons point to the movie engaging the audience more than just portraying what the book says. More reasons also point to why the book focused more on relationships and less on fight scenes. Those reasons also explain why the movie focused more on fight scenes than relationships.
I think that Ford didn’t really care about sunsets. I have a reason to believe like this because it explains why the movie rarely showed sunsets. I also think the movie rarely showed sunsets because the director might have thought that watching sunsets in a movie would be boring. Ford decided to show sunsets at the beginning and the end because he probably wanted to symbolize the start and the end of the book.He also probably knew that no one would pay money for a movie that talks a lot about sunsets. Ford also decided to show sunsets in the beginning and the end, rather than Pony and Cherry discuss them because Ford wanted to save money on the actors to act out the scenes described in the book. He doesn’t want to lose money, he wants to gain money and make a profit. The book and the movie had similar ideas about the sunset when Pony stated that if Cherry can see the sunset from the west side, she can also see it from the east side too. Coppola also thought that sunset weren’t that important.
To make money out of the movie, the director probably had a bright idea to include longer fight scenes in the movie than was supposed to. I think he wanted longer fight scenes because he wanted to engage the audience with some action than just discussing about relationships. I have a strong feeling that the director doesn’t really care about relationships because he might have thought it was boring. Besides, Ford would have to spend more money paying the actors if he included more scenes about relationships. All of the action in the movie would attract a lot of people to watch the movie. I think Ford wants longer action scenes to generate more wealth for himself.
In conclusion, I think that Francis Ford Coppola decided to show sunsets in the beginning and end, rather than Pony and Cherry discuss them so that he could save a little bit of money. I also think, to Ford, sunsets were of little importance to him. The fight scenes were longer in the movie than in the book because Ford probably wanted to go more “in-depth” about what was happening in those scenes. In other words relationships weren’t at all that important while the fight scenes were in the movie. Also the relationships weren’t that engaging as in the fight scenes in the movie.

In this assignment, In had to make something similar to a summary, an essay about what I learned in The Outsiders. Actually it's just a comparison between the book version and the movie version. I chose to showcase this essay on my portfolio because it shows how well I can give the details necessary to give a good comparison.
In this photo I am showcasing my root words for working on number roots. For this assignment I had to create a word web based on the root words for the number. In this case my number is one with the root words semi and hemi. I chose to showcase this because it shows how much words I know of that uses these root words.

8th grade literature schoolwork starts here
Quarter 1
In this photograph, I am showcasing my "Book in a Bag" Project. For this project I had to read through any book of my choosing. This book had to be at a middle school-level of course. For my book, I chose the book, Flora and Ulysses. This book is about a young girl named Flora who found a squirrel that got sucked by a vacuum who Mrs. Tickham, Flora's neighbor, was using. Flora then saved the squirrel, Ulysses, and triggered a life long adventure with him. I chose to showcase this piece of work because I get to show how well I can describe and draw different kinds of things.

Quarter 2
In this document, I am showcasing my fictitious interview with the character from the book I'm reading, Almost Astronauts. This book is all about how 13 women dared to dream to be an astronaut someday. In this interview, I am asking Jerrie Cobb, one of the first who wanted to be an astronaut, about what the requirements are to become an astronaut and how she and the other twelve women fought for what they wanted. I wanted to showcase this project because I wanted to show my interviewing skills.
Literature Circle Assignment #1
Book: Left to Tell An event in my book that I am reading, Left to Tell, that makes me me feel hopeful, worry, pity, hopelessness, and fear is the event of the genocide (holocaust) of the Tutsi people of Rwanda. I feel hopeful because Leonard, Immaculee's father, and Immaculee herself have hope that everything is going to be fine and okay because God is always watching over them and all the Tutsi people. I feel worried because Immaculee’s family might not survive through the Rwandan genocide (holocaust) since her whole family is of Tutsi race. I feel pity because, right now where I am reading right now, Pastor Murinzi made Vianney, Immaculee’s brother, and Augustine, a good friend of Vianney, leave and fend for themselves. It is very sorrowful because Pastor Murinzi lets the women stay and the men can’t. I feel a sense of hopelessness and fear because the people who kill all the Tutsis are all around the bathroom Immaculee and five other strangers are hiding in. |
In this Literature Circle Assignment, I had to write about an event in the book that makes me feel hopeful,, worry, pity, hopelessness, and fear. The event i chose is the holocaust of the Tutsi people in Rwanda. I selected this for my portfolio because this assignment tells you how all these feelings can develop as you read in this book.

“Of Mice of Men” Final Assignment Explanation
On the outside of my envelope, I drew the setting of the Salinas River because it represents the place where Lennie ran off to when he accidentally killed Curley’s wife. The second thing I have outside my envelope is a sticker of an old-looking dog.The third thing I have on the front to the bottom right of my envelope is a mop representing Candy’s work at the ranch as a swamper. Behind the front, I chose to draw people looking like Lennie and Curley because it stands for an important major conflict. That major conflict is Man V.S. Man because Curley always wants to bait Lennie into having a fight with him. Also on the back, I chose to put a “people holding hands and one person left out” picture because this picture also represents an important theme. This theme is discrimination. The last picture I chose is a picture of a mouse because Lennie adores petting any animal that is furry and soft.
On the inside of my envelope, I chose to draw a picture of a thought bubble because Lennie is always thinking about how George might not let him tend the rabbits. The second picture I drew is an “X” because it represented the discrimination happening on the ranch. The third picture I chose was a clipart gun because it stands for when George shot Lennie on the bank of Salinas River. The fourth item I chose to put in my envelope is a broken heart because it shows that Curley and Curley’s wife don’t really love each other. The fifth item I chose is an “angry face” emoji because it symbolizes how angry Curley gets when he encounters large people. The sixth object I chose was a piece of white paper which symbolizes that life on the ranch isn’t that lively and colorful.
The seventh object I chose is a pencil shaped like a gavel because everyone listens to Slim since his word is the law. The eighth item is a penny because it shows how George and Lennie are saving up money to live off the fatta the lan’. The ninth object is a plush penguin keychain because Lennie is always delighted when he pets things that are soft and furry. The last item I chose is a piece of dark chocolate because it shows that Curley acts bitterly when he sees Lennie.

In this project, I had to decorate a container, such as an envelope, soup can, or a cereal box for the final assignment for our book ,"Of Mice and Men". I chose to decorate an envelope for this project. I chose to showcase this project on my portfolio because it shows how creative I can be on decorating this envelope.
Literature Circle Assignment #2
Book: Left to Tell
December 4, 2015
Dear Immaculee,
It agonizes me to imagine you locked up in the bathroom with no freedom. While you are in the bathroom, I have come to realize that I should take action and give you good advice. I assure you that the advice I am about to give you will hopefully make you feel better.
The first piece of advice I have for you is that since I can see that you keep on praying for everyone’s safety and for the genocide (holocaust) to stop I want you to keep doing this. The second piece of advice I have for you is to keep reading the Bible Pastor Murinzi gave you and never stop reading it. The reason for doing this is because this for you to keep your thoughts away from the genocide from time to time. The third piece of advice keep your confidence in getting rescued and for the holocaust to end. You have to keep all your confidence because without it, the devil in your head will start to speak to you again. Another piece of advice I have for you is forgive the killers who killed your family in the holocaust. I know that forgiving is a challenging and troublesome to do but it is what God expects us all to do. Something else you should do is to open your heart to God and pray as much as you can. God always listens to our prayers and I hope he answers all you prayers during this troubling times.

In this Literature Circle Assignment, I had to write an advice letter to one meaningful person in my book. The book I am reading currently is "Left to Tell." I wrote about how I wanted Immaculee to continue to trust in God by doing things such as reading the Bible at every chance she has.
Born Worker Assignment
Hello everyone! My name is Jose and I wanted to share a few things with you before I leave. Life a wasn’t easy for me right when I was born. What I can say is that I was born into a very loving and compassionate family with two caring parents. What I care about now is working just like my father has to provide for my family. My dad is my inspiration and he’s the one who keeps me going everyday. One piece of advice I have for all of you is to always respect your parents and help out all the time. My cousin, Arnie, does the complete opposite. He always sits back and relaxes telling his parents what he wants without helping them. I hope that all of you won’t act like my spoiled cousin. I hope that all of you will help out your parents because they work hard everyday just to take care of you. I also wanted to share that life is difficult and you really have to work for it. If you just sit back and relax all the time, you will have a lot of “rude awakenings” in your life.
I also have some advice to share with you today. A piece of advice I have is that you should never be afraid to ask your parents if they need some help. It is a really generous and loving way to give back for all they do to take care of you. Also if you feel like you are being “controlled” by someone like they are the boss, don’t be frightened to tell the person to get up and stand up to them. This is exactly what Arnie did to me; he just relaxes while I did all of the work like he is my boss. I now know that I had to step in and tell Arnie to do some work but I didn’t. This is why I wanted to share this advice with you so that you won’t make the same mistake I did. The last piece of advice I have for all of you is don’t let the amount of money a person has dominate you. We are all human and no person should be judged by the amount of money a person has. I wish you all good luck in High School. Thank You.

In this assignment I had to pretend that I was Jose from the short-story, "The Born Worker." I chose to showcase this on my portfolio because I wanted to show how well I could relate back to the main character and act like him/her.
Non-Fiction Book Project: Quotations
1. “Most of the people who live in this rugged country seem to have no desire to be severed from the modern world or the untidy flow of human progress.”
2. “Finally I woke up enough to recognize that the cavalry wasn't coming so I better do something about it myself.”
This quote has a special meaning to me because it teaches you to take initiative in the situations you’re in. In this quote, Jon realized that nobody was going to save him so he knew he had to take action and get out of where he was.
3. “I accepted the assignment because I was in the grip of the Everest mystique. In truth, I wanted to climb the mountain as badly as I'd ever wanted anything in my life.”
- Jon Krakauer
This particular quote has a special meaning to me because all of us have something we want to do as badly as Jon. Wanting things such as becoming an astronaut or receiving something you worked hard for all your life. We, as human beings, are always ambitious just how Jon is ambitious to climb Mount Everest.
4. “From the time we arrived at the South Col," says John Taske "Yasuko was totally focused oin the top—it was almost like she was in a trance."
-John Taske
This specific quote has a special meaning to me because this shows that once you are almost to your goal, you feel like if this is happening or not.
5. “Why did veteran Himalayan guides keep moving upward, ushering a gaggle of relatively inexperienced amateurs into an apparent death trap?”
- Jon Krakauer
This particular quote contains a special meaning to me because it shows how we might go too far into our goals such that you are willing to do anything possible just to reach that goal.
6. “Look this is an emergency. People are dying up there. We need to be able to communicate with Hall’s team to coordinate a rescue. Please lend your radio to Jon. Woodall said no. It was very clear what was at stake, but they wouldn’t give up their radio”
- David Breashears
This quote has a special meaning to me because it makes me furious how Woodall wouldn’t give his radio to Jon even though David specifically said that it was an emergency.
7. “Lying in that crevasse, I was thinking it may be it may be it.”
- Jon Krakauer
This quote is special to me because I too get the sense of giving up when things are very tough and nearly impossible to accomplish.
8. “We all made it, God I’m tired”
- Scott Fisker
This is a very special quote because I too feel the deep sense of accomplishment of doing something you worked hard for a long time. I can very much relate very much with this quote Scott has said.
9. “You’re a tough man, Big Guy,” said Cotter, his voice quavering. “We’ll send some boys up to you in the morning “
-Guy Cotter
The quote is very important in the case of my book where Jon, all the guides, and Sherpas. This quote is important because you always need strength, especially if you are climbing up a mountain as extreme as Mount Everest.
10. “I love you. Sleep well, my sweetheart. Please don’t worry too much.”
- Rob Hall
This is an important quote in the book because to me, you should always say, “I love you,” to the person you love because you never know if they might suddenly disappear.
11. “By the time you get to the top, I guarantee that you’re gonna be one hurtin’ hombre”
- Doug Hansen
This particular quote has a special meaning to me I sometimes get this feeling of achieving a goal I had for a long time, such as learning to ride a bike, and it did hurt when I fell a few times. In the end I was satisfied knowing that I accomplished the goal of riding my bike.
12. “I’ve put too much of myself into this mountain to quit now, without giving it everything I’ve got”
- Doug Hanen
This quote by Doug pertains to me a lot and has a special meaning to me because I am the type of person unwilling to just give up because of things such as a ton of homework.
13. “I was in continual agony; I have never in my whole life been so tired.”
- Jon Krakauer
This quote by Jon has a special meaning to me because I often feel tired when I work on I am hiking up more tiny mountains, not like this one.
14. “He was complaining that he hadn’t slept in a couple of days, hadn’t eaten. But he was determined to strap his gear on and climb when the time came.”
- Dr. Seaborn Beck Weathers
This quote has a special meaning behind it which means that even though Doug has been complaining and is cranky, he still wanted to go on to accomplish his dream of climbing up Mt. Everest.
15. “I only wish we could have gotten more clients to the top.”
- Rob Hill
This quote has a special meaning to me since I recall many times when I wished something would happen, just like Rob did.
16. “I couldn’t stop crying. Saying good-bye to you was one of the saddest things I’ve ever done.”
- Linda
This certain quote has a special meaning to me because many people (as do I) may experience this feeling when losing somebody you loved or if someone was away for a long time.
17. “I’m doing fine, but I wish you were here.”
- Linda
This particular quote has a special meaning because you would feel the same thing as Linda if you haven’t seen a relative or friend for ages or if they live somewhere distant where you don’t see them that much.
18. “Well, we will try.”
- Jon Krakauer
This quote has a special meaning to me because, in my opinion, you should always be trying things all the time and not giving up that easily. I try to act as Jon says as often as possible.
19. “Climbing Everest has been a personal dream of mine ever since I was very young.”
- Jon Krakauer
This is a special quote to me because I too have dreams of mine in the upcoming future, just as how Jon has a dream of climbing Mt. Everest. One of my dreams are to live a long, delightful life.
20. “But I hated growing up under apartheid.”
- Ian Woodall
This particular quote is special to me because I remember especially Nelson Mandela who fought to stop the apartheid. I also remember Martin Luther King Jr. who also fought to end segregation.
1. “Most of the people who live in this rugged country seem to have no desire to be severed from the modern world or the untidy flow of human progress.”
- Jon Krakauer

In this assignment I had to find quotes in my book where Jon Krakauer survived the climb and decent of Mount Everest. I chose to showcase this on my portfolio because it describes my personal reactions to what other people say.
In this project, I had to create a poster for Women's History Month.
